Human Smuggling Case: Court Sets January Mention, No Bail for Accused Trio

BUTTERWORTH: The Sessions Court here today refused bail for a woman, a teenage girl and a Myanmar man accused of smuggling five migrants, pending the next mention date on January 13.

Judge Roslan Hamid recorded the not-guilty plea of Umi Kalsom Abidin, 29, and a 17-year-old girl, while the charge against Kyaw Zin Lin, 19, could not be read due to the absence of a Myanmar interpreter.

The suspects allegedly committed the offence at a parking lot opposite SJKT Bukit Mertajam on December 2 at 6.40pm.

They face charges under Section 26A of the ATIPSOM Act read with Section 34 of the Penal Code, which carries up to 20 years’ jail and a fine upon conviction.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Siti Nur Amalina Harun did not offer bail, citing case circumstances, and the court agreed.

Investigations suggest the woman and the teenager acted as transporters, while the Myanmar man is believed to be linked to the syndicate as an agent.
