Malaysia Stands Firm as Neutral Mediator, Anwar Says Criticism of Role in Thailand–Cambodia Dispute Misguided

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has reiterated that Malaysia’s involvement in efforts to reduce tensions between Thailand and Cambodia is based purely on diplomatic goodwill and regional responsibility, rejecting accusations that Malaysia overstepped its role.

Anwar stated that Malaysia’s position has always been one of neutrality, with the country acting as a facilitator rather than a decision-maker. Malaysian engagement, he explained, has been conducted in close consultation with both Bangkok and Phnom Penh and strictly within the framework of ASEAN principles.

He clarified that agreements such as the Kuala Lumpur Declaration and border-related discussions were undertaken only after full approval and participation from both parties. Malaysia did not impose decisions but supported a diplomatic process built on mutual consent.

Welcoming the recent ceasefire reinforcement agreed during talks in Yunnan, China, Anwar thanked China for its constructive contribution in hosting meaningful negotiations. He also acknowledged the role of U.S. President Donald Trump in supporting earlier diplomatic efforts that helped prevent further confrontation.

Addressing developments in Myanmar, Anwar said ASEAN would continue to monitor the situation carefully, stressing the importance of avoiding premature recognition or actions that could trigger instability.

Anwar’s statement reflects Malaysia’s determination to strengthen ASEAN unity and ensure Southeast Asia remains stable despite geopolitical pressures. He insisted that criticism will not derail Malaysia’s efforts to play a responsible diplomatic role while safeguarding regional peace.
