Online Safety Act now in force, aims to make the internet safer for children and families

KUALA LUMPUR: The Online Safety Act 2025 (ONSA) officially takes effect today, marking an important step towards creating a safer digital environment for Malaysians, particularly children and families.

According to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), the Act requires licensed digital service providers to actively tackle online harms by implementing appropriate safety measures, safeguarding children online and ensuring users have accessible channels to report harmful content or incidents.

ONSA applies to licensed application, content and network service providers under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, though it does not extend to individual users.

Additionally, with the enforcement of Section 46A ‘deeming’ provision, major social media platforms that meet specified criteria will now fall under Malaysia’s licensing framework and must comply with national laws, including ONSA.

MCMC said the move forms part of a broader, phased regulatory strategy to ensure greater accountability among large-scale online platforms operating in the country.

The commission also pledged continued collaboration with parents, educators, industry players, law enforcement and civil society to promote a safer online ecosystem for all users.
