Shoppers unharmed in Plaza Merdeka ceiling mishap; mall reassures public safety

KUCHING: A section of the ceiling at Plaza Merdeka collapsed on Wednesday night, briefly startling shoppers celebrating New Year’s Eve, but the mall’s management has assured that the situation is under control and the premises remain safe.

According to the mall’s statement, two individuals sustained slight injuries from falling debris and were promptly assisted before being transported to hospital for precautionary medical checks.

The management said its maintenance team acted quickly to isolate the affected area and carry out safety measures to protect visitors.

“Public safety remains our utmost concern and Plaza Merdeka continues to operate safely. We will continue to provide updates where necessary,” the statement added.

The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department later confirmed that a team from the Padungan fire station was deployed to the scene following the alert.

It also confirmed that the injured victims were taken to hospital for follow-up treatment and no serious injuries were reported.
