KUALA LUMPUR – Penang police have confirmed that the son of a woman who died in a house fire alongside her adopted daughter earlier this month will soon be charged in connection with the incident.
State Police Chief Datuk Azizee Ismail said the investigation papers have been finalised and handed to the State Public Prosecutor’s Office. The case is being handled under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which relates to murder and carries severe penalties upon conviction.
The fire broke out at a rented house in Taman Rathna, Butterworth on December 10 at approximately 9.45am. The blaze claimed the lives of a woman in her 50s and her adopted five-year-old daughter. The suspect, believed to be in his 20s and the biological son of the deceased woman, sustained injuries after being hit by a collapsing section of the kitchen roof.
He had earlier been remanded to facilitate an in-depth investigation including forensic fire analysis, collection of physical evidence, witness testimonies, and review of medical findings.
At the same time, Fire and Rescue Department Director-General Datuk Seri Nor Hisham Mohammad said a comprehensive report from the department will soon be submitted to the police. The report is expected to be crucial in determining the true cause of the fire and whether human factors or possible foul play were involved.
The incident shocked nearby residents, many of whom witnessed the rapidly spreading flames and attempted to help before fire personnel arrived. The deaths of both victims have left a profound emotional impact, particularly due to the loss of a child.
This case has gained widespread attention because it involves close family members and serious criminal implications. Police assured that the investigation was conducted carefully, transparently and professionally to uphold justice.
Once the charge is formally brought to court, proceedings are expected to provide clearer insight into what led to the disaster, including the sequence of events, forensic findings and supporting testimony.
For now, the anticipated prosecution marks an important phase in the pursuit of accountability and closure following a tragedy that stunned the community and raised troubling questions about what truly unfolded in the home that morning.
