Mexico’s Naval Training Ship Cuauhtemoc Returns Home After Extensive Repairs in the U.S.

MEXICO CITY: After more than six months of repairs in the United States, the Mexican Navy’s training ship Cuauhtemoc has returned home to a ceremonial welcome at the port of Veracruz.

The vessel required major restoration after crashing into New York’s Brooklyn Bridge on May 17, an incident that claimed the lives of two young naval recruits.

President Claudia Sheinbaum was present to greet the crew, praising their resilience, professionalism and unity throughout a trying period. A total of 277 sailors were onboard when the collision occurred.

The ceremony also coincided with the 200th anniversary of Mexico’s naval independence, celebrating the 1825 capture of San Juan de Ulua—the final bastion of Spanish control.

Cuauhtemoc’s return marks both the end of a difficult chapter and a reaffirmation of the country’s maritime identity.
