Strength, Sacrifice and a Father’s Memory: How Amir Daniel Brought SEA Games Judo Glory Back to Malaysia

GEORGE TOWN, Dec 21 — After more than four decades of waiting, Malaysia finally reclaimed glory in SEA Games judo thanks to the remarkable resilience and determination of 21-year-old national athlete Amir Daniel Abdul Majeed.

By capturing the men’s under-81kg gold medal in Thailand, Amir ended a 44-year drought that had long haunted the national judo scene. The victory marked not only a personal milestone but a historical breakthrough for the sport in Malaysia.

Amir’s achievement was built through rigorous preparation, including a demanding month-long training stint in Mongolia, known globally as a powerhouse in judo. He and his teammates underwent intensive daily sessions designed to elevate physical strength, technical sharpness and mental resilience.

The young judoka admitted that past SEA Games outings, where he only won bronze, served as important lessons. This year, however, expectations were high, with the coaching team and association targeting nothing less than gold.

The most powerful element of his story, however, was the emotional adversity he faced when his father passed away midway through his training in Mongolia. Despite the heartbreaking news, Amir remained steadfast and chose to channel his grief into motivation.

“This gold medal belongs to my late father. He was my biggest supporter and the one who introduced me to judo. Everything I achieved today began with his guidance and encouragement,” Amir said.

Looking ahead, Amir is determined not to let this triumph be the peak of his journey. He now aims for the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games, while eyeing qualification points that could turn him into Malaysia’s first-ever Olympic judoka in 2028.

His coach, Mat Nashriq Md Nasir, praised Amir’s incredible discipline, describing his journey as a story built over two decades of commitment. He highlighted the crucial backing from government agencies and sports bodies that made continuous training and competition possible.

Amir’s triumph was celebrated with pride in Penang and across the nation, seen as a spark of inspiration for future generations of Malaysian athletes.
