PUTRAJAYA – Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s call for Proton to survive for at least 100 years reflects a deeper message about national pride, technological capability and the importance of sustaining Malaysia’s industrial identity.
Speaking during a gathering with owners of limited-edition Proton models, the former prime minister highlighted how Proton represents confidence, determination and the belief that Malaysians are capable of competing with global players.
He recalled consciously using Proton vehicles during his leadership years to send a clear signal that national products should be supported, respected and continuously improved.
Dr Mahathir stressed that Malaysia has the capacity to excel in advanced industries, provided the nation continues to foster innovation, discipline and belief in its own abilities. He envisions a future where Malaysia not only assembles vehicles, but builds engines, machinery and complex automotive systems independently.
Beyond technology, he applauded efforts by car enthusiasts who preserve older Proton models, calling it a meaningful tribute to Malaysia’s engineering journey.
He concluded with hope that even if he does not live long enough to witness Proton reach its centennial milestone, future generations will proudly see it as a lasting symbol of national achievement.
