Sultan Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah Bridge Closure Announced Ahead of Major Night Cycling Event

BATU KAWAN: Motorists in Penang have been advised to take note of the upcoming temporary closure of the Sultan Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah Bridge (JSAHMS) for two nights in early January as preparations intensify for the Penang 2nd Bridge PDRM Solidarity Fun Ride 2026.

According to Jambatan Kedua Sdn Bhd (JKSB), the bridge will be closed from 8pm until 2.30am on January 3 and 4 to ensure a safe and controlled route for thousands of cyclists taking part in the highly anticipated night cycling event. The public is encouraged to plan their travel schedules accordingly and avoid unnecessary delays.

During the closure, road users are urged to divert to the First Penang Bridge for travel between the island and mainland. Meanwhile, motorists travelling from the North-South Expressway toward Batu Kawan Industrial Park (BKIP) or Bandar Cassia are recommended to exit via Bukit Tambun Utara Toll Plaza.

JKSB emphasised the importance of obeying road signs, advisory notices and instructions issued by authorities during the closure period. Its hotline remains open for traffic enquiries and emergency assistance at 1-300-30-2828.

Penang Police earlier revealed that more than 3,000 cyclists from Malaysia and overseas are expected to participate in the sixth edition of the night ride. Penang Police Chief Datuk Azizee Ismail highlighted that the event provides a rare opportunity for participants to cycle across Malaysia’s longest bridge in a lively yet controlled environment.

He said the programme plays a key role in strengthening the relationship between the police and local communities while promoting healthy lifestyles and supporting ongoing crime-prevention initiatives. The 52-kilometre route starts at Queensbay Mall, travels along the JSAHMS and returns to the same point for the finishing line.

Beyond fostering unity, the event is anticipated to contribute to sports tourism growth in Penang by positioning the state as a preferred destination for cycling activities. The public is encouraged to stay informed on traffic announcements to ensure smoother travel during the closure period.
