COP30: TNB Emerges as Key Enabler Driving ASEAN Power Grid Energy Cooperation

KUALA LUMPUR — The ASEAN Power Grid is increasingly seen as a cornerstone of Southeast Asia’s energy transition, with Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) reaffirming its leadership role in enabling cross-border power interconnections and multilateral energy trading.

At COP30 in Brazil, TNB President and CEO Datuk Megat Jalaluddin Megat Hassan emphasised that ASEAN’s experience with projects such as the Laos–Thailand–Malaysia–Singapore interconnection demonstrates the feasibility of regional electricity trade at scale.

He noted that ASEAN must now focus on harmonising grid infrastructure, technical standards and regulatory frameworks to facilitate seamless flows of clean energy across borders.

Emerging initiatives linking Vietnam, Malaysia and Singapore further highlight ASEAN’s commitment to leveraging renewable energy resources across national boundaries, supporting collective decarbonisation goals.

Megat Jalaluddin said Malaysia’s role as ASEAN Chair in 2025 strengthens its ability to convene stakeholders and accelerate implementation of APG initiatives.

Aligned with Malaysia’s National Energy Transition Roadmap, TNB continues to modernise the grid, integrate renewables and advance digital solutions to support a secure and flexible power system.

He concluded that sustained collaboration and policy alignment will be key to unlocking ASEAN’s full potential as an interconnected, resilient and low-carbon energy region.
