Anwar to Convene Special Cabinet Meeting Ahead of 2026 New Year Address, Key Policy Signals Anticipated

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim is expected to unveil several significant policy directions during the Prime Minister’s Department monthly assembly on Monday, following a special Cabinet meeting scheduled earlier the same day.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the prime minister’s 2026 New Year Message will address a range of pressing national issues, including economic management, education reform and institutional restructuring.

Speaking at the Melaka DAP Convention on Sunday, Loke explained that the first working day of the new year would begin with a special Cabinet meeting convened by Anwar to deliberate on several urgent matters affecting the country.

“After the Cabinet meeting, at about 11.30am, the prime minister will deliver his New Year Message for 2026 to officers and staff of the Prime Minister’s Department,” he said.

According to Loke, the announcements expected during the address are intended to provide clarity and reassurance at a time when both businesses and the public are navigating economic uncertainty.

He noted that the Madani Government views early engagement and decisive policy direction as essential in maintaining confidence among investors, civil servants and the wider population.

“The prime minister’s message will touch on critical areas such as economic resilience, the education system and institutional reform, which are all interconnected and crucial to the country’s long-term stability,” Loke said.

He added that the upcoming announcements would reflect the administration’s seriousness in confronting current challenges, particularly those affecting the business community.

“There are concerns among business owners about the operating environment, especially in a climate that is not entirely positive,” he said.

Loke acknowledged that issues such as delays in tax refunds and cash flow pressures have weighed on businesses, but expressed confidence that constructive measures would be announced.

“These matters will be addressed. I am confident that tomorrow we will see positive announcements that respond to these concerns and help stabilise the business environment,” he said.

The New Year Message, Loke added, is also expected to outline the government’s overall direction and priorities for 2026, setting the tone for policy implementation across ministries and agencies.

However, he stressed that announcements alone are insufficient without effective execution.

“What matters most is not just the policies announced, but how they are implemented and translated into concrete action on the ground,” he said.

Also present at the convention was Melaka DAP chairman and Kota Melaka Member of Parliament Khoo Poay Tiong.
