Unity Lights the Way: Anwar, Michelle Yeoh Launch I LITE U Ahead of Visit Malaysia 2026

Malaysia’s unity and diversity took centre stage in the heart of Kuala Lumpur as Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim launched the I LITE U urban lighting initiative, calling on Malaysians to defend national harmony as the country prepares to welcome the world in 2026.

The launch at Pavilion KL marked the start of a major beautification and placemaking effort in Bukit Bintang, while also serving as an early highlight of the Visit Malaysia 2026 campaign.

Anwar said Malaysia’s strength lies in its multicultural fabric, which has enabled the country to grow as a peaceful and attractive destination for global travellers.

“Our tourism success is built on peace and unity,” he said. “Every race, every state, every community plays a role in shaping Malaysia’s story.”

He described Malaysians as a collective force — bound not by ethnicity, but by shared pride and purpose.

The event was graced by Oscar-winning actress Michelle Yeoh, who said she felt honoured to play a role in welcoming international visitors to Malaysia.

Yeoh reflected on the symbolism of light, describing it as both a guide and an invitation.

“VM2026 is an open invitation to the world — to experience our culture, our food, our warmth and our hearts,” she said.

She added that Malaysia’s story in 2026 would be one of beauty, heritage and forward-looking innovation.

The I LITE U project features more than 70 LED installations across a one-kilometre stretch of Bukit Bintang, creating a visually striking nightscape while prioritising sustainability and public safety.

Key elements include illuminated gateways, a VM2026 sculpture, improved pedestrian crossings and enhanced night-time walkability.

The project aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goal 11 and Kuala Lumpur’s low-carbon objectives, with plans to replicate the initiative in other cities nationwide.

The launch ceremony featured a lively parade of contingents from various agencies and schools, accompanied by traditional and contemporary cultural performances that brought the streets of Bukit Bintang to life.

For many visitors, the illuminated streets offered a glimpse of Malaysia’s ambitions — not just as a tourist destination, but as a confident, united nation ready to shine on the global stage.
